Dragonflies Are Free

Who am I? I am a wife, a mother, a teacher in need of a regular job, a prospective graduate student. That says it all.

My name is Elena and I am all of the above. I am currently working as a substitute teacher while I try to figure out what to do with my life!

Love Is Walking Hand In Hand: The Peanuts Gang Defines Love, 1965

The Peanuts series by Charles M. Schulz endures as one of the most beloved cartoons of all time, partly because of Schulz’s gift for capturing the great, tender truths of human existence through remarkably simple, sometimes poetic, often humorous, always profound vignettes. Hardly does it get more profound and poetic, however, than in Schulz’s 1965 book, Love is Walking Hand In Hand — an utterly lovely tiny treasure, in which Lucy and Snoopy and Charlie Brown and the rest of the Peanuts gang define love through the simple acts and moments of everyday life.

New York City Bans References To Dinosaurs, Birthdays, Halloween, Dancing In Standardized Tests

In an effort to eliminate potential “unpleasant emotions” among students, the New York Department of Education has placed a ban on mentions of “birthdays,” “dinosaurs,” “Halloween,” and “dancing,” in city-issued tests, the New York Post reports.

According to the paper, the mandate is meant to curb fear that references to those topics might stir controversy among students. Dinosaurs, officials said, could bring up evolution, Halloween could suggest paganism, and birthdays might create animosity among students who are Jehovah’s witnesses, since they don’t celebrate them.

CBS New York reports the word “poverty” is also not allowed, as “words that suggest wealth” might cause some students to feel excluded. The Center for Educational Innovation’s Sy Fliegal told the station the new rules aren’t necessary.

“The Petersons take a vacation for five days in their Mercedes … so what,” Fliegal said, according to CBS New York. “You think our kids are going to be offended because they don’t have a Mercedes? You think our kids are going to say, ‘I’m offended; how could they ask me a question about a Mercedes? I don’t have a Mercedes!’”

The department is also banning mentions of “divorce” and “disease,” in case students have loved ones who are separated or suffering from an illness. “Slavery” is also flagged and “terrorism” is considered too scary.

Department officials told FOX News Nation that the mandates are simply meant to be sensitive to a diverse student body.

“This is standard language that has been used by test publishers for many years and allows our students to complete practice exams without distraction,” a Department of Education spokeswoman told the publication, insisting the move is not censorship.

Robert Pondiscio, a spokesperson for the Core Knowledge Foundation, says the new policy gets rid of topics children relate to the most.

“The intent is to avoid giving offense or disadvantage any test takers by privileging prior knowledge,” Pondiscio told the New York Post. “But the irony is they’re eliminating some subjects, like junk food, holidays and popular music, that the broadest number of kids are likely to know quite a lot about.”

I would like to start something. I want to start a campaign. I want to teach the world about respect again.

I just read an article about a 10-year old girl who killed herself because of bullying. Ten years old, and she saw nothing left to live for in life.

I remember being ten. I remember…

It was a choice for me.

If I’m gonna do this, I may as well start bluntly. And before you go running away and going “This bitch is crazy,” listen to my reasoning.

First off, I’m going to say that I don’t believe it’s a choice for everyone. I believe that some people are truly born gay or straight or bisexual or pansexual or asexual or aromantic or trans whatever else is in the spectrum of LGBTQ. I do believe that is a very real possibility for a good majority of people.

Let me also say this. I do, in fact, identify as a bisexual. Hell, I have a wonderful, beautiful, amazing, strong, fantastic girlfriend. That is what I identify with…now.

Saw this picture on imgur and just had to post it here, because this is without a doubt, one of the most badass women alive. Meet Katrina Hodge, a corporal in the British Army and Miss England 2009. According to Wikipedia, she enlisted back in 2004 after her brother challenged her to and earned the nickname “Combat Barbie” after showing up at her assigned unit wearing false eyelashes, kitten heels (whatever those are) and carry a pink suitcase. In 2005 her unit, the Royal Anglian Regiment, was deployed to Iraq, where she saved the lives of her comrades from a prisoner by wrestling not one, but two rifles from him and then knocking his ass out with her bare hands.
With her bare hands.
Then in 2009, she decided to compete in the Miss England competition to destroy stereotypes about women in the military. She didn’t win (she placed runner-up), but still became Miss England after the woman who did got into a fight and gave up the crown. While Miss England, Hodge convinced the people running the competition to ditch the bikini contest, because she felt that it was more important to be a role model than looking good in a bikini.
In 2010, she handed over the crown and returned to military service, being deployed to Afghanistan.
This woman is both a BAMF and a HBIC. Damn.

A Loss

Nothing compares to that moment in time when you find out that a friend you haven’t seen in long while passed away. It literally takes your breath away knowing that you passed on the last chance to see her not realizing that it would be your last chance. That’s what happened to me tonight. I logged on to Facebook wanting to contact a wonderful woman I graduated with. This was something that I have been meaning to do for quite some time but I just didn’t have the time to do it. Imagine my surprise when I go to her FB and see the messages of “We will miss you” and “You were taken too soon.” I was blown away. So I quickly googled her name and found her obituary. Her memorial service was 10 days ago. It looks like she passed away just days after her birthday as well.

What really gets me about this whole thing is that I neglected to contact her. I wanted to but I just never got around to it. So now I feel guilty as well. This was a woman who really helped me get through the last few semesters of school. If I had a problem she was first on my list of contacts to help me solve it. It was rare for me to go on to someone else. She had a lot of great tips for me and I hope I had many for her as well.

So that puts me here now. I am at a loss at how to proceed right now. So I’ll stop here and say Rest In Peace, Michelle. Thank you so much for all you did with and for me to help me achieve my goal of becoming an elementary school teacher.
